Sunda: Cirebon
Please pray for the Sunda: Cirebon people. This is a high priority unrecorded language (#16944, ISO SUN). About three weeks ago Cahyo got a word list for this language and just last week Josh was processing the word list and commented that these were about one million people in this language, all with no Gospel resources. We decided to ask Cahyo to focus on it. Cahyo lives about an hour away from these people.
Then, day before yesterday, an earthquake hit and many were killed. I looked at the GRN digital language map and the red X for unrecorded Sunda was directly on the epicenter of this earthquake. We checked with Cahyo and he informed us that his family were all well although the house rolled around for about five minutes.
We can only assume that in God’s wisdom, all of this is fitting together for the arrival of the Good News, and that one day the pain and suffering of this world will be replaced and that even now the reign of God and presence of God are very real.
[Rom 8:17, 28 KJV] 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together. … 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.
In his book on “God and the Pandemic” (chapter 4), N T Wright says this about Romans 8:28:
After providing insight from the Book of Acts about how the church supported each other during a famine, Wright turns his focus to Romans 8. The key verse, Romans 8:28, ought to be understood as saying, “God works all things towards ultimate good with and through those who love him” (pub.Aug 2020).
Notice how this shifts the focus of God’s blessing. I had always taken this to be a personal promise and reward for personal obedience, but here we become agents with God for bringing “ultimate good.” We suffer “with” Him in order, together with Him, to bring good. That would include the Good News of course.
Let us share the pain of the Sunda: Cirebon but also pray for the very real presence of the Spirit of Jesus to invade and comfort their hearts.
God Bless,
Larry DeVilbiss
